Can someone please tell me the correct way to set my timing? I just got a new distributer and my car seems to be running a little funny. I wanna see what the dealer set the timing at. I just went and bought a timing gun w/ an degree wheel on it. I looked at the crank pully and the white line is lining up w/ the mark at 10 degrees. Shouldnt the red mark be lining up w/ the mark instead though?? HELP! By the way, I was there when he changed out the distributor, yesterday, but now I have the same code today. What gives w/ this pesky code 9?? Thanx guys

To adjust the timing:
1- Warm the car up, should idle at around 800
2- Turn off ALL accessories
3- Short the maintanace switch under the pasanager kick panel
4- Loosen the destributer
5- with a timing light rotate the destributer until the desired timing is reached.

how do you know when the desired timing is reached? do you line up the white or the red spot on the pulley w/ the mark?

Why do you need to short the service connector? I know it says to, but I'm just curious why.
As for the marks, the red spot is 16 degrees. The white spot is 10 degrees. to the left and right of the red spot there should be uncolored notches. Those are the 14 and 18 marks.

If you don't short the service connector, the ECU will attempt to keep timing at 16 degrees through electronic means and you won't get your timing set accurately.
The White Mark is NOT 10 degrees! (I'm not slamming you, AcuraMan, I just want this to be noticed). It is 0 degrees. I can't imagine how crappy the engine would run set to 0 degrees.
You can guess at 8 degrees, which is halfway between the 16 and 0 degree marks.
Better still, use a high end timing light that tells you where the timing is set. Or measure and paint marks on the crank pulley. (Easy when it's on your kitchen table, slightly difficult when it's bolted to the crank!).

We have done test with the service connector shorted and with the not connected and we can move the timing to were we want. So the service connector is not need but then you are a 100% but i have not found that it make much of a diff.
